St Patrick’s races painting

John Dynon with his piece 'longshot'

The long running tradition of community artists supplying the St Patricks race club with their promotional artwork sees thousands of fliers and posters printed each year with a local artistic touch.

This is the third time that John has received the honour in his career and has supplied the club with ‘Longshot’, a beautiful painting with a little bit of cheeky humour.

The painting depicts the race course with the jockey’s ‘longshot’ taking prominence and the deep browns, reds and oranges that make up the famous Broken Hill landscape filling the majority of the canvas.

John takes obvious pleasure in creating his work and was more than happy to help out this year when the race club asked for his contribution.

“This one took a bit longer than others because I did spend a bit of time talking to people and getting the colours right.

“I deliberately kept the sky cloud free and I’m pretty happy with the end result.”

The races will take place on Saturday the 19th of March 2011 and Secretary Manager of St Pats Race Club, Cheryl Krutli, said there is a lot to look forward to.

“We are introducing some new areas in 2011, including a fabulous marquee for the younger market as well as upgrading some existing facilities…”

Ms Krutli said that the people of Broken Hill and the surrounding area can help promote the races by picking up and distributing some of the posters and brochures from their Visitor Information Centre in Crystal Street.

“As in past years we encourage people to pick some up and help us spread the word.

“We will mail out most of the membership brochures to those on our database and some of the posters, but supportive locals who would like to pick up either a poster or brochure to distribute themselves are most welcome.”
